Dr. Pittenger was raised in Florence, Oregon, where his mother was a Nurse-Midwife, and his father was a Marriage and Family Therapist. In search of adventure, he went to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Honors Program, where he received a BS in Mathematics in 1995. In his last year of college, he realized that his heart was really in science and healing. Sights now set on a medical career, he went back to school to complete the pre-requisites in the Biochemistry program, working part time tutoring, moving furniture, and delivering pizzas.
He received his MD from the University of Washington in 2001. He completed Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Washington in 2004, and has practiced medicine at NBMC ever since.
Dr. Pittenger has been Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine since 2004. He has achieved Testamur status in the highly selective National Board of Echocardiography and was the first Medical Director of the Bay Area Hospital Echo Lab, which became Nationally Certified under ICAEL under his leadership. He is a past President of the Medical Staff at Bay Area Hospital, where he helped build the Prefontaine Cardiovascular Center and recruit the first Cardiologists to the Coos Bay Area.
He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, where he was awarded the Outstanding Young Physician Award in 2009. He has been a member of various local and statewide committees and Boards.
His practice is currently 50% Internal Medicine, 25% Echocardiography, and 25% Gastroenterology. He loves helping people and feels blessed that he has found this calling. He finds it hard to imagine ever retiring. He enjoys poetry, running, hiking, gardening, painting rocks, and spending time with his adult children.
