Dr. El Youssef joined the Internal Medicine Department at NBMC in March 2024. He is an Adult Endocrinologist who specializes in Diabetes Management, specifically type 1 diabetes. Dr. El Youssef earned his Medical Degree from the University of the West Indies (M.B.B.S.) in 2000 where he was awarded a full 5-year University Scholarship after achieving first place in the Caribbean University Scholarship exams. Dr. El Youssef continued working in the Caribbean as an Internal Medicine provider before deciding to move to the United States to further his medical training. In 2007, he completed his 3-year Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Las Vegas, School of Medicine, and spent a year there as the Chief Resident of the Internal Medicine Program until 2008. At that time, he moved over to Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in Portland to start his Endocrinology Fellowship, which he completed in 2010. He then worked at OHSU as an Endocrinologist specializing in Diabetes Management until his move to NBMC in 2024.
While at OHSU, Dr. El Youssef earned his Masters in Clinical Research (M.C.R.) after completing the Human Investigators Program (HIP). From 2009 until 2021, Dr. El Youssef was a part of the Oregon Artificial Pancreas research team at OHSU, working to develop and improve computer software now used in smart insulin pumps and glucose sensors. His research expertise also extends to exercise in type 1 diabetes, with over 40 publications in several prestigious diabetes journals. Dr. El Youssef also served in various capacities at OHSU, including: Internal Review Board (IRB) member; Dual Faculty Appointment in Endocrinology and Biomedical Engineering, serving as a post-graduate mentor in both positions; Principal Investigator for NIH-funded research at OHSU and at the Oregon National Primate Research Center; and Diabetes Coordinator for the Total Pancreatectomy and Autologous Islet Transplantation (TPAIT) committee at OHSU.
Dr. El Youssef is married. He enjoys playing the piano, listening to audiobooks, and is an avid computer user with some experience in computer programming. His favorite movies are the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but he also holds the Star Wars, Start Trek, and Harry Potter franchises in high regard.
